This ride

In this video, we are traveling on the Intercity from Amsterdam Centraal to Deventer, via Hilversum, Amersfoort Centraal, and Apeldoorn. We are doing this with seven ICMm carriages: the coupled sets 4078 and 4210. During this trip, I am accompanied by an experienced colleague as part of my reintegration process.

The Koploper is gradually disappearing from the Dutch railway landscape. Many enthusiasts find this a pity, and I understand that well. It is an iconic train that has been part of the Dutch Intercity network for decades. Certainly from that high cab, it remains a special train to drive.

From the cab

High views, until things take a different turn…

That high vantage point also has a downside: the cab sits right under the overhead lines. The deposits on the front windows create a speckled image and a white haze, which is clearly visible in the video. Nevertheless, we try to enjoy that view on every trip.

The journey is going smoothly, until we approach a red signal to let a train from another carrier pass us. As I brake to come to a stop before the stop signal, I see something on the track that doesn't belong there…
