About Roy
Rolling stock qualifications
As a train driver at NS, I am authorized to drive a wide range of train types. These authorizations are only obtained after successfully completing extensive training programs that focus on both theory and practice. Below you will find an overview of the rolling stock I am authorized to drive.
🟦 Sprinters
The Sprinters are fast stopping trains for regional connections. I am authorized to:

- SLT – Sprinter Light Train
This is a modern commuter train with a lightweight design, suitable for shorter routes with many stops.

- SNG – Sprinter New Generation
The latest generation of Sprinters with wide doors, comfortable entry, and modern technology.

- FLIRT – Flinker Leichter Innovativer Regionaltriebzug
The FLIRT is a powerful sprinter series that primarily operates in the east/southeast of the country.
🟨 Intercities
These trains run over longer distances and stop less frequently. I am authorized to operate the following Intercity rolling stock types:

- ICMm – Intercity Rolling Stock Modernized
A classic with a modern twist, recognizable by the single baking pan and comfortable chairs.

- DDZ – Double-decker zoning
The upgraded double-deckers, with a division between quiet and work zones. Often deployed on busy routes.

- VIRMm – Extended Interregional Rolling Stock modernized
The modern double-deckers with enhanced comfort, widely used on long-distance routes.

- ICNG – Intercity New Generation
The newest high-tech intercity, built for high speed (up to 200 km/h) and cross-border traffic.
NB: For this rolling stock, I am only authorized to drive under ATB and not under ERTMS.
🛠️ Additional authority: APS-TGV on SNG-T

In addition to the standard SNG, I am additionally authorized to operate a modified version of this train. These sets are equipped with:
- An external camera system (instead of mirrors)
- A central door control in the cab
This combination enables the driver to carry out the departure process independently, without assistance from the chief conductor. This is called a Technically Guided Departure Process (APS-TGV).

This specific deployment takes place on the trajectory:
Amsterdam Centraal – Schiphol – Hoofddorp
Known as the Airport Sprinter.
This method requires additional training and specific safety procedures, and is an example of how technology and craftsmanship come together in the modern railway company.
